Our speaker, James Wright, has a lengthy track record of combining the study of archaeology and folklore to gain a deeper understanding of thought processes in the past. His work has included research into historic mark-making (graffiti), traditional protection from evil and bad luck, and the stories that we tell about ancient buildings.
James’ book on the folklore of historic buildings – Historic Building Mythbusting: Uncovering Folklore, History and Archaeology – was the runner-up for The Katharine Briggs Award in 2025 which was administered by The Folklore Society. The book also received positive commendations from eminent folklorists such as Mark & Tracey Norman, Jeremy Harte, and Brian Hoggard.
