Mediaeval visual art is often forgotten or dismissed as beastly, boorish or barbarian – essentially an aberration caught between the Classical world and the Renaissance. However, an intensive study of sculptural art and architecture of the period, in England, betrays a conscious and distinctive intellectualism which demonstrates a powerful union between patron and artist. Whilst being dominated by Christian morality, there is nevertheless a great complexity to the often playful and earthy themes which is coupled to an incredible technical ability.
This course can be taught as a series of shorter sessions or as a one or two- day school. Topics covered can include sculpture, craftsmen and architecture.
