Subterranean Knole

Despite many years if active and ongoing years of archaeological work, the late mediaeval great house at Knole (Kent) still has many secrets left to give up! During 2021, Triskele Heritage were commissioned by the National Trust to research two curious spaces: the ice house in the parkland and the cellars under the north range of the house.

This talk seeks to outline the history and archaeology of two previously overlooked aspects of Knole’s underground structures. The research takes us on a journey which includes country house technology, rare mediaeval wall paintings and to the very beginnings of the house – before even the archbishops of Canterbury took the property on…
