The window is possibly one of the most overlooked features of historic buildings. They are literally something to gaze out of, or in through, and this means that they are perhaps not considered in and of themselves by many people. Windows, though, offer a huge amount of information about ancient buildings.
Their forms change over time and provide useful information in dating structures. Their functions can tell us about the use, status and perception of a space. They can be blocked, altered or reused – all of which tell us vital things about human need and agency. Windows are also liminal spaces – neither quite inside or outside of the building – and have historically been the cause of concern about who – or what – might be trying to access a property…
