Recording & Analysing Historic Buildings

Teaching volunteers as part of ‘Knole Unwrapped’ for the National Trust.

The course looks at how buildings archaeologists assess and understand the fabric of our historic architecture on site. It is part taught in a classroom and part practical in the field.

The class sessions look at what sorts of buildings are studied, specific case studies, the reasons for recording them, methods employed in the field, what to look for on site and how to piece together a report. The practical sessions involve direct observation and drawing up plans of a nearby historic building.

Previous workshops have been held at an 11th century monastery, several mediaeval parish churches, a Renaissance palace and an 18th century mansion.
